Nuclear Proliferation Issues

Security for a New Century 111th Congress

On June 15, 2009, Security for a New Century, a bipartisan study group for Congress, sponsored a discussion on nuclear nonproliferation.  Dr. Morton H. Halperin, senior advisor to the Open Society Institute and commissioner on the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, and Dr. Andrew K. Semmel, former deputy assistant secretary of State for Nuclear Nonproliferation, discussed nuclear proliferation issues particularly in the context of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).  The NPT will come under review in 2010. Dr. Halperin and Dr. Semmel addressed the success of these institutions at curtailing the spread of nuclear weapons and monitoring civilian nuclear programs and discussed available options for confronting countries that develop nuclear capabilities in violation of their commitments.  Security for a New Century meets regularly with U.S. and international policy professionals to discuss the post-Cold War and post-9/11 security environment.
