CPP Spring 2016: Spring Retreat

On May 14th and 15th, participants in the Spring 2016 class of the Congressional Partnership Program will join foreign policy and national security experts for a weekend of thought provoking discussions about issues in the world today and bipartisan team-building.

On May 14th, participants heard from Jodi Herman (Senate Foreign Relations Committee minority staff) and Les Munson (former Senate Foreign Relations Committee majority staff) on the mechanics of bipartisan consensus on the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015.

John McLaughlin, former Deputy Director of the CIA, gave the keynote speech on “Global Challenges for Today and Tomorrow.”

 

On May 15th, Ambassador Robert Gallucci, discussed North Korea and regional security, and Dr. Frances Burwell, discussed EU stability and the migration crisis.

Ambassador Gallucci was chief U.S. negotiator during the North Korean nuclear crisis of 1994, and served as Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs and as Deputy Executive Chairman of the UN Special Commission overseeing the disarmament of Iraq following the first Gulf War. He is currently Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University

Dr. Burwell is Vice President, European Union and Special Initiatives at the Atlantic Council. Her work focuses on the European Union and US-EU relations as well as a range of transatlantic economic, political, and defense issues. Prior to joining the Atlantic Council, Dr. Burwell was Executive Director of the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland.
